HOW YOUR BRAKES WORK

The typical, Sheridan, Englewood, Littleton or Denver vehicle's brake system consists of disc brakes in front and either disc or drum brakes in the rear connected by a system of tubes and hoses that link the brake at each wheel to the master cylinder. Other systems that are connected with the brake system include the parking brakes, power brake booster and the anti-lock system.

When you step on the brake pedal, a piston in the master cylinder forces hydraulic oil (brake fluid) through a series of tubes and hoses to the braking unit at each wheel. On a disc brake, the fluid from the master cylinder is forced into a caliper where it presses against a piston. The piston squeezes two brake pads against the disc (rotor), which is attached to the wheel, forcing it to slow down or stop. This process is similar to a bicycle brake where two rubber pads rub against the wheel rim creating friction. With drum brakes, fluid is forced into the wheel cylinder, which pushes the brake shoes out so that the friction linings are pressed against the drum, which is attached to the wheel, causing the wheel to stop. When the pedal is released, springs return the brakes to their normal position.

SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE A PROBLEM

The most common problem facing your brake system is wear. Every time you apply your brakes during Denver rush hour, you're wearing them out ever-so-slightly. Other problems that will affect your brake system are old and dirty brake fluid, leaks and clogs in the fluid lines and hoses, and problems with the drums, rotors and hydraulic components. Recognizing a brake warning sign is imperative to avoid a complete brake failure. Here are some things to look (and listen) for:

  • Hear loud or frequent squeaks or grinding
  • Smell an acid, burning odor
  • Feel your brake pedal "squish" or become difficult to depress
  • Feel shuddering or a continuous vibration in the steering wheel when braking
  • See rust or metal flakes peeling off your brakes
  • See the brake system warning light turn on
